I am a Puerto Rican anthropologist interested in the history of the human-nature interface. Over the years, I focused on fisheries, coastal communities, coastal development, marine conservation and uses of forests. This is a sister blog for the Antropico at http://amp-pr.org/antropico written in Spanish.

I teach at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez where I am the director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Coastal Studies (or Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios del Litoral, CIEL). CIEL has its own blog, and we also managed two other web logs on Marine Protected Areas and Fish Spawning Aggregations (both are bilingual).

Our work is interdisciplinary, and we have graduate and undergraduate students of marine biology, biology, engineering, sociology, psychology, planning and anthropology at CIEL.

This blog is part of my personal and professional effort of “coming home’ to the field of Anthropology, after a career in the administration of research and outreach efforts, and working in fisheries management and conservation issues.
